Queue with a View

Apologies to Hannah, who was the only person to comment on the previous post. All is forgiven. Thank you, our dedicated fans, for being so quick to reply to our 'Mugged' post :D

Today we purchased some 'hop on/hop off' tour bus tickets from our lovely French concierge. Belle had the brilliant idea of sitting up the top of the double decker bus with no roof. From our high position we were able to see some excellent French landscapes and buildings such as libraries, churches, Bastille gaol, River Seine, awesome bridges and a really cool indoor sports centre (it did everything from skiing to wind surfing - don't ask me how).

After turning into something resembling ice popsicles, we did the Tin Man walk to the nearest famous Scottish restaurant (aka McDonalds or Maccas for you Aussies) and had a hot lunch. I had a bit of difficulty locating salt from one of the servers who didn't seem to speak much English. She handed me some Earl Grey Tea at which point, I gave up.

The Arc de Triomphe in all its glory, was massive. It stood in the middle of a little island, or roundabout, and the only way to it was underneath the roads. Very cool. We were a little bit stingy and decided against paying the 9 euros to go up to the top. After all, we figured, we were heading to the Tour Eiffel! Worth mentioning is that it had the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under it - similar to what we have in Australia, Canberra.
On the way back to the tour bus, Belle couldn't resist purchasing a magazine that had Johnny Depp, in a rather striking pose, on the front cover. Then it was the Tour Eiffel!! Yay! So very tall... Belle and I navigated our way through the gypsies selling miniture Eiffel Towers and beanies. The lines were so long - and this was off peak season! We must have stood there for a good hour, with gypsies walking up and down the queue shaking their keyrings for sale. The first lot of photos are from the second level of the tower. They decided to open the rest of the tower after we had purchased our tickets for the second level. However, we didn't realise this and waited in line for another hour to use the elevator to the top. The ticket guy refused to let us up, and kindly pointed out the queue to purchase the next lot of tickets. Finally, having the correct tickets, we made our way in the elevator right to the top (I had my eyes closed because there were no walls around the elevator - Belle says I'm a wuss). The view from the top (246m up) was pretty spectacular. The usual gift shop walkthrough at the exit was slightly different this time. It consisted of ten gypsies all holding identical tacky souvenirs.

Belle bought a massive cotton candy on the way back to the tour bus. By the time the bus stopped (and we woke up) it was dark and the tour had finished for the day. We wandered over to giant ferris wheel which had a brilliant view of the Eiffel Tower - all lit up. Every hour on the hour, the tower puts on a light display. After the ferris wheel, we walked along the markets before catching a taxi back to Notre Dame (near our hotel). A very exciting day with lots of height!

Hoping to see the Louvre tomorrow.
Love,

Bek and Belle

Embarrassing moment of the day: Sorry, none for today :(

  1. Yah! I am the first to comment. I am with you again Bek- Heights are not for me, maybe the first rung of a ladder. I thought Johnny Depp had been given the heave ho?
Most of Queensland is still under water-Rockhampton this time. Another earthquake in Chile and more in Christchurch. Talk about End Times!.
    Love you , Grandma
